Painting in Progress

This example shows one of my partially completed works, with the horse still to be done.  The work is oil on canvas, and the reference picture above the easel was provided by the client's family.  This young student is greeting the horse on the first day of class at SCAD.  (Savannah College of Art & Design).

Inspiration

Most of my inspiration comes from creation.  The color in the ocean, the wind, the constantly changing air, sky and light.  The faces, eyes, smiles, presence and happiness of people, Other inspirations come from man-made objects like sails, boats, buildings and other abstract images.

Techniques

The oil painting techniques used on my portraits has been the most challenging and rewarding part of being an artist.  The majority of my other paintings have been in oil, with a style that moves between impressionism and realism.  I am currently painting more acrylic works, with pallet knives, sponges and brushes.  Sketching with charcoal, and playing around with watercolors are also fun and yield pleasing results.

career highlights

One of the most rewarding parts of being an artist, was spending a week in a portrait class led by the American artist, Everett Raymond Kinstler.  He was an amazing person, patient and able to communicate extremely well.  He painted the portraits of several US Presidents, movie stars, the astronauts, and many others.  One very important thing I learned from him, was value, which is the determination of what are the lightest and darkest areas of a painting.
